RESUMP – The Marblehead Sump Pump Redirection Program is a public outreach and education program sponsored by the Marblehead Water and Sewer Commission.
Excess unnecessary flow on the sanitary sewer system can cause backups, overflows, and high treatment costs. Excess flow can come from public and private sources. The Water and Sewer Commission regularly inspects the public sewer system for sources of excess flow, but private sources can be difficult to identify.
The RESUMP program aims to educate Marblehead residents to understand the effects of private sump pump and drain connections to the sanitary sewer system, and identify these connections.
The goals of RESUMP are to:
- REQUEST all residents take the time to review sanitary sewer connections on their property.
- EDUCATE residents to identify sources of excess flow on their property.
- STUDY the impact of excess unnecessary flows on the sanitary sewer systems.
- UNDERSTAND how a resident can have a powerful role in providing valuable input for capital improvement projects and rate setting.
- MOTIVATE residents to confirm that their connection is legal.
- PROVIDE the ability to report their illegal connections.
In some neighborhoods, a sanitary sewer connection may be the only available discharge for the sump pump to avoid flooding or icing. The information collected in the RESUMP program translates into recommendations to the Storm Water (Drain) Department for extensions to the drainage infrastructure and sump pump connection points.
